  • April 30, 2026 - Marguerite Bourgeoys opens Ville Marie's First school for French and Indian children, in a stone stable measuring 12 m by 6m borrowed from the Company of Montréal. Montréal, Quebec
  • April 30, 2026 - The King writes to Count Frontenac, complaining of his arbitrary conduct; threatens to recall him unless he mends his ways; he also orders that whoever went to the woods without a license (i.e. as a "coureur de bois") should be branded and whipped for the first offence, and sent for life to the galleys for the second offence.   • April 30, 2026 - King William's War - Militia colonel William Pepperell's transports, which left Massachusetts March 24, now backed by a Royal Navy fleet under the command of Commodore Peter Warren, anchor at Flat Point Cove in Gabarus Bay west of Louisbourg, and land cannon to begin a siege; the fortress, defended by 560 regular French soldiers and 1,400 militiamen, will surrender June 17 after a six-week siege.   • April 30, 2026 - Sunbury County created as the northern-most county of Nova Scotia; encompasses most of present-day New Brunswick. Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • April 30, 2026 - Parrtown and Carleton became Saint John, the First incorporated city in Canada. Saint John, New Brunswick
  • April 30, 2026 - Napoleon Bonaparte sells Louisiana to the US for $27 million; 4¢/acre for 800,000 sq. miles of central North America; territories between the Mississippi and the Rocky Mountains First claimed by explorers from New France. Paris, France
  • April 30, 2026 - Mandamus issued giving Mgr. Plessis a seat in the Legislative Council as Catholic Bishop of Quebec.
  • April 30, 2026 - Scottish botanist David Douglas is the first European to climb a peak in the Canadian Rocky Mountains; the Douglas Fir is named after him. BC
  • April 30, 2026 - Oblate Father Léon Fouquet, OMI, born in Agentré, Mayenne, France.
  • April 30, 2026 - Lord Elgin drives into Montreal; he is soon surrounded by a hostile mob, which pelt him with stones, forcing him to drive him back to Monklands. Montreal, Quebec
  • April 30, 2026 - Rail - Francis Hincks from Canada and Edward Chandler from New Brunswick meet with British Prime Minister the Earl of Derby to discuss railway development in British North America; Joseph Howe from Nova Scotia was delayed and couldn't attend the meeting. London England
  • April 30, 2026 - Chilcotin War - Klattasine, Tallot and other members of the Tsilhqot'in people working as packers for Alfred Waddington's road crew, attacked more workers and settlers, killing 19 in total. Waddington later testified that fears about the outbreak of smallpox was the cause of the unrest; others suggested it arose from the sale of firearms to the Chilcotin at a time when they were suffering from lack of food. Judge Matthew Begbie later concluded that the people were concerned over title to land rather than "plunder or revenge"; there were also grievances about desecration of graves and interference with valuable spring waters.   • April 30 - Confederation - The Prince Edward Island Legislature authorizes a delegation to the proposed maritime union discussions. Charlottetown, PEI
  • April 30, 2026 - Fredericton City Council approves James Tibbetts' application to erect a sawmill on The Green below Christ Church Cathedral; outraged citizens force the council to cancel the project. Fredericton, New Brunswick

  • April 30, 2026 - Rail - Victoria coal baron Robert Dunsmuir starts building the Esquimalt and Nanaimo (E&N) Railway, later known as the Vancouver Island Railway, to support the coal and lumber industry and the Royal Navy Base at Esquimalt Harbour; on August 13, 2026 John A. Macdonald will drive home the last railway spike at Cliffside near Shawnigan Lake. Victoria, BC
  • April 30, 2026 - Aboriginal - Lethbridge News reports a battle between the Blackfoot and Cree people. Lethbridge, Alberta
  • April 30, 2026 - Keg of gunpowder costs $6 at the Hudson's Bay Company store in Fort Qu'Appelle; a pair of high-top boots costs $3.55. Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan
  • April 30, 2026 - St. Anne's College at Church Point gets university charter. Church Point, Nova Scotia
  • April 30, 2026 - American steel magnate Andrew Carnegie attends the official opening of the first Ottawa Public Library building. "The building cost approximately $200,000, and had been made possible by the $100,000 endowment from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation." Ottawa, Ontario (OPL)
  • April 30, 2026 - Disaster - Cable ship Mackay-Bennett reaches Halifax with first bodies recovered from the sinking of RMS Titanic. Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • April 30, 2026 - CPR launches steamer Nasookin (1869 tons) at Nelson, BC. Leased to Province in 1931 as a car ferry across Kootenay Lake. Bought and re-built by Province in 1933, retired in 1947.
  • April 30, 2026 - Musquash hydro-electric dam ruptures with a crashing that surpassed the loudest thunder; washes out downstream roads, bridges, houses and barns. Musquash, New Brunswick
  • April 30, 2026 - Princeton-British Columbia Colliery Company, Limited, falls into receivership.
  • April 30, 2026 - RCMP absorbs provincial police force of New Brunswick due to near bankruptcy of the province. Fredericton, New Brunswick
  • April 30, 2026 - World War II - German U-boat torpedoes Canadian passenger ship Nerissa off Ireland; 73 Canadian Army personnel lost. Atlantic Ocean
  • April 30, 2026 - Finance - Toronto Stock Exchange's TSE Index hits wartime low of 84.8 on news of German victories. Toronto, Ontario
  • April 30, 2026 - World War II - First Canadian Parachute Battalion crosses the Elbe into Germany.
  • April 30, 2026 - Energy - Construction starts on $95 million Interprovincial Pipeline to carry oil from Alberta to the Lakehead. Edmonton, Alberta
  • April 30, 2026 - Mining – Granby Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. shuts down its Copper Mountain operation at Princeton, BC.
  • April 30, 2026 - Mining – West Canadian Collieries ceases operations at the Greenhill mine. Blairmore, Alberta
  • April 30, 2026 - Military - Lt. Gen. H.D. Graham leaves the Canadian armed forces; last officer with a World War I ribbon to retire. Ottawa, Ontario

  • April 30, 2026 - Music – Canadian folksingers Ian and Sylvia perform their hit Four Strong Winds and other songs at Carnegie Hall, New York; the pair will perform together until May, 1975. New York, New York
  • April 30, 2026 - Energy – First computer-controlled CP Rail unit coal train reaches Roberts Bank from mines in Alberta. Vancouver, BC
  • April 30, 2026 - Terrorism - Canadian government allows the anti-terrorist Public Order (Temporary Measures) Act to lapse at midnight; FLQ still illegal under Criminal Code. Ottawa, Ontario
  • April 30 - Energy - Hydro Québec outlines plans to build $6 billion hydro-electric power project in James Bay region; largest such development ever undertaken in the western hemisphere. Montréal, Québec
  • April 30, 2026 - Ralph Steinhauer appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta by Pierre Trudeau; former chief of the Saddle Lake Cree Indian band the first aboriginal Canadian named to a viceregal position; holds the position until 1979. Edmonton, Alberta
  • April 30, 2026 - Energy - Commons passes the Petroleum Administration Act, allowing the federal government to set the domestic price of oil and natural gas without the agreement of energy-producing provinces. Ottawa, Ontario
  • April 30, 2026 - Royal Canadian Mint opens its new branch in Winnipeg; will use nickel from Thompson and other northern Manitoba mines to produce all general currency, while the Ottawa mint concentrated solely on collector coins and ceremonial currency. Designed by architect Étienne Gaboury, the Winnipeg mint, features two large walls of bronze tinted glass, and operates the first fully automated currency-making system in North America.   • April 30, 2026 - Energy - Alberta Alsands oil project collapses despite offers of aid from Ottawa and Alberta. Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • April 30, 2026 - Politics - Joe Clark faces off in a Massey Hall leadership debate with Brian Mulroney and other contenders; Clark had resigned in January, and called a leadership convention for June. Toronto, Ontario
  • April 30, 2026 - Baseball - Strong winds across Exhibition Stadium from Lake Ontario cause a 30 minute delay, then cancellation of a Toronto Blue Jays game with the Texas Rangers. Toronto, Ontario
  • April 30, 2026 - Constitution - Brian Mulroney and 10 provincial premiers agree on a constitutional draft called the Meech Lake Accord, to enable Québec to join the constitutional fold by meeting its five conditions, including recognizing Québec as a distinct society; receives unanimous agreement on June 2 and June 3 in Ottawa; needs to be ratified by Parliament and all provincial legislatures by June 23, 2026 to become law.   • April 30, 2026 - Aboriginal - Group of 500 evacuated Mohawks from the 9,000 member Akwesasne reserve decide not to return home until dispute on gambling resolved. Cornwall, Ontario
  • April 30, 2026 - Media - CRTC brings in new rules for radio stations; starting in 1999, stations had to play 35% Canadian content, up from 30%; a single owner in larger markets will be able to own up to two AM and two FM stations. Ottawa, Ontario
  • April 30, 2026 - Royalty - Prince Andrew, fourth in line to the Canadian throne, arrives in Halifax to undertake duties; will also visit Toronto and Cambridge. Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • April 30, 2026 - Football - Dylan Barker chosen first-overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL Draft; Moose Jaw native and Saskatchewan Huskies football player. Toronto, Ontario

  • April 30, 2026 - Justice - Terri-Lynne McClintic pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of eight-year-old Victoria Stafford; gets automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years; publication ban put into place during the trial; trial of co-accused Michael Rafferty follows in 2002; will be found guilty of first-degree murder, sexual assault causing bodily harm and kidnapping.   • April 30 - Media - Cogeco acquires 11 Quebec radio stations from Corus Entertainment Inc. for $80 million; Cogeco also owns five stations in Montreal, Quebec City, Trois-Rivieres and Sherbrooke. Québec
  • April 30, 2026 - Montreal's Georges St-Pierre retains his welterweight title beating challenger Jake Shields in UFC's Ontario debut at the Rogers Centre; record for attendance (55,724) and gate ($11.5 million) for a North American mixed martial arts show. Toronto, Ontario
  • April 30 - Major flooding caused by rains and rapid snowmelt begins on Lake Champlain and down the Richelieu River valley; about 3,000 homes in the Montérégie region will be flooded; Premier Jean Charest will ask for assistance from the Canadian Forces. Québec

  • April 30, 2026 - Deschamps Report - Ottawa releases report of former Supreme Court justice Marie Deschamps on sexual abuse, harassment and discrimination in the Canadian Forces; criticizes the military's tolerance of an "endemic" macho culture; makes 10 recommendations for change.   • April 30 - Basketball - Andrew Wiggins named NBA rookie of the year; the Vaughan, Ontario, native is the first Canadian and the first Minnesota Timberwolves player to earn the honour. Minneapolis, Minnesota
