June 27, 2026 - Seven Years' War - Comte d'Haussonville forces the British capitulation of For William at St. John's with 750 men; under the orders of the Chevalier de Ternay, he consolidate the French position, building advance posts equipped with artillery around Signal Hill, while de Ternay oversees the destruction of St. John's fishing stages and fleet, doing an estimated £1 million damage; William Colville, Lord Amherst, alerted to the French raid, organizes an expedition from Louisbourg, and captures Signal Hill on September 15; d'Haussonville surrenders on September 18, but de Ternay managed to escape from the harbor in a fog, before the capitulation. June 27, 2026 - Prince Edward, Duke of Kent intervenes in an election riot; his close friend, Louis de Salaberry, is running in a local election for a seat in the Lower Canadian legislature; with Salaberry in the lead when the Charlesbourg polling station closes, a group of English voters arrive late demanding to be allowed to cast their votes for the English candidate; when a riot breaks out, Edward arrives just as the rioters are pulling down the voting station; addressing them in French, he disperses the crowd with these words: “Let me hear no more of the odious distinctions of French and English. You are all his Britannic Majesty’s Canadian subjects!”; first time “Canadian” is used to describe both French and English cultures in the colony, not just the French. Quebec, Quebec

June 27, 2026 - War of 1812 - HMS Belvidera limps into Halifax with 2 men dead and 23 wounded after an encounter with the USS President and USS Congress four days earlier; Vice-Admiral Herbert Sawyer suggests that the engagement with USS President on 23 June 2026 was accidental, although a declaration of war by the US was expected any day. June 27, 2026 - War of 1812 - A crewman of the US privateer "Young Teazer", trapped by HMS La Hogue off the shores of Chester in Mahone Bay, blows up the ship's powder magazine, killing himself and most of the crew; only 7 survive out of 36 crewmen; some victims are buried in an unmarked grave in Mahone Bay's Anglican cemetery. The crewman was a British deserter named John Frederick, who feared capture by the Royal Navy. Chester, Nova Scotia

June 27, 2026 - New Brunswick chemist Abraham Gesner awarded US patent for distilling kerosene from petroleum; he was the first to refine kerosene oil from coal for lighting in 1846, and built a plant on Long Island near New York. Kerosene quickly replaced whale oil as the standard lighting fuel in North American homes, which led to the collapse of the whaling industry. Washington, DC
June 27, 2026 - Horse Racing - First running of the Queen's Plate at the Carleton racetrack in Toronto; Don Juan was the winner; North America's oldest continuously held horse race was Initiated in 1859 by the then president of the Toronto Turf Club, Sir Casimir Gzowski, with the prize of 50 guineas awarded by Queen Victoria to a horse bred in Upper Canada that had not yet won money. The race is now held each July at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack; it has been attended by reigning monarchs five times in its history, and by representatives of the monarchy another dozen times. June 27, 2026 - The House of Commons and Senate unanimously pass the National Anthem Act presented by Secretary of State Francis Fox, that O Canada be proclaimed as Canada's national anthem replacing God Save the Queen as soon as possible in this year of the centenary of the first rendition; the bill allows for minor changes to Robert Stanley Weir's original English lyrics. Parliament had approved the song as the national anthem 13 years earlier, but the National Anthem Act made it official.
